My student is playing a simplified version of the 1st movement of “Moonlight Sonata”. I brought a CD for her to listen and the sheet music too. To our surprise we couldn’t follow the music while listening to a CD because … because we got lost. Interesting, we thought, and began to listen one more time. Same effect. One more time and then we figure it out. The pianist skipped a part, played something like Moonlight sonata but his (her) own version and then came to the final part with a melody in the left hand. I have no idea who is playing on this particular CD, it was a gift from my friend long long time ago when CDs were more of a luxury in our life. Anyway, I asked my colleague to join me and we tried to follow the music again. That was fun 🙂

I came home and found all my CDs with Beethoven’s Sonatas. Now I know that when I want to I can listen to Glenn Gould, Sviatoslav Richter, Michael Pletnev or Alfred Brendel.
